Patta History Ethos
Our country has such a rich history that has everything from tragedy to romance to comedy and stories that changed the world. Our attempt is also to allow people to find their true identity as Sri Lankans and take pride in being who we are.
-Ruwani Hettiarachchi, Executive Producer, Patta History
Sri Lankaโs history spans 38,000 years. We had to turn it into weekly episodes.
The challenge wasnโt the animation - it was building a machine that could reliably produce 40 minutes of high-quality animation every month without breaking the bank or burning out the team.
We borrowed from heist movies.
Think about it - a heist crew doesnโt get second chances. Each specialist executes their part perfectly, at exactly the right moment, because the entire operation depends on it. We built our pipeline the same way.
Four weeks. One shot at each stage:
Each handoff is final. No safety nets. No โweโll fix it in post.โ
Traditional animation is built for perfection through iteration. We built for precision through preparation. When you remove the possibility of revision, something interesting happens - people stop second-guessing and start delivering.
But these arenโt flaws. Theyโre features. Theyโre what allows us to turn complex historical narratives into engaging weekly content without the usual overhead of animation production.
Since launching in November 2020, Patta History has transformed how Sri Lankan stories reach their audience. From ancient kings to independence struggles, each episode brings history to life through animation. The series now reaches across language barriers, with content in Sinhala and Tamil, earning recognition from global content creators like Kraut.
Two seasons of Sri Lankan history, transformed into animation that connects with modern audiences. A testament to what happens when you embrace constraints instead of fighting them.
